Undergraduate thesis on the 2D simulation of the Lituya Bay megatsunami using MPM
On 27 July 2026, Lucas Peydró Ferrando, a student from the Bachelor’s Degree in Physics at the University of Alicante, successfully defended an undergraduate thesis that I co-supervised, receiving a grade of 9.9 out of 10.
The thesis, entitled Simulación Numérica de las olas generadas por deslizamientos mediante el método del punto material: aplicación al caso de Lituya Bay, investigates the numerical simulation of large waves generated when landslides impact bodies of water. These events are particularly challenging to model because of the complex interaction between the sliding material and the water, the large deformation of the terrain, and the evolution of free surfaces. The work focuses on the well-known 1958 Lituya Bay event in Alaska, a widely studied benchmark for landslide-generated waves. A two-dimensional model was constructed using the Material Point Method (MPM), a numerical technique especially suited to problems involving large deformations. The study included the definition of the physical properties of the problem and the analysis of both the landslide evolution and the resulting wave.
The numerical results were compared with experimental data and simulations obtained using other numerical methods. This comparison made it possible to assess the ability of MPM to reproduce the main physical mechanisms of the event, while also examining its current strengths and limitations for geotechnical engineering and natural-hazard applications.
I am very happy with Lucas’s work and with the results he achieved. I would particularly like to highlight the rigour with which he approached the study of the numerical methods, his commitment to exploring the world of finite element methods and, more specifically, the Material Point Method, and the care he took in reading and understanding all the research papers I sent him throughout the project. His dedication and scientific curiosity were evident during the development of the thesis. Congratulations, Lucas, on an excellent piece of work!
